Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds have a sort of jokey rivalry thing going on Instagram, so it makes sense that Ryan and Blake Lively would pop up for the big official Broadway opening of this show (which was delayed not just by Covid itself, but the fact that Hugh and Sutton Foster then GOT Covid during previews). But I was surprised to see Anne Hathaway, until I remembered a) Hugh was Jean Valjean in the Les Miserables for which Anne won her Oscar, and b) WeCrashed is premiering next month and she’s probably got to warm up to the idea of coming out of her Covid cave (as we all do). Come to think of it, how come Anne hasn’t been ON Broadway? Doesn’t that feel inevitable? That whole pompous Les Mis film dined out on the fact that the actors, gasp, sang in-scene as opposed to in studio later — something Broadway actors do eight times a week. So we know she can do it, but if that many shows scares her, why not a play? Am I forgetting something she’s done? SURELY Anne Hathaway has thought fleetingly about trying to EGOT.
