Eight people dead, hundreds injured at Houston's Astroworld Festival - World News - Castanet.net

UPDATE: 1:25 p.m.

Houston Police have said the Astroworld tragedy seemed like it happened "over the course of just a few minutes."

Eight people died and hundreds were injured in a stampede during Travis Scott's set at the Astroworld music festival in Houston, Texas, on Friday night, and police said the speed of the incident took them by surprise.

"It happened all at once. It seemed like it just happened... over the course of just a few minutes," said Executive Assistant Chief Larry Satterwhite. "Suddenly we had several people down on the ground, experiencing some type of cardiac arrest or some type of medical episode."

According to the Houston Chronicle, Scott stopped his set multiple times when he spotted fans in distress near the front of the stage. He asked security to check on them and help them out of the crowd.

Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo called it an "extremely tragic night".

Houston Fire Chief Samuel Pena told reporters: "We had at least eight confirmed fatalities tonight and scores of individuals that were injured. The crowd began to compress towards the front of the stage, and that caused some panic, and it started causing some injuries. People began to fall out, become unconscious, and it created additional panic."

Houston Police Chief Troy Finner added: "I think it's very important that none of us speculate. Nobody has all the answers tonight. If you don't have facts, if you don't have evidence, I'm not going to speak against that. We have hurting families out here."

Eight people were killed and hundreds were injured during a concert in Houston Friday night.

About 50,000 people attended the Astroworld Festival at Houston's NRG Park Friday night, when attendees reportedly began rushing the stage at around 9 p.m. local time.

“[The crowd] for whatever reason began to push and surge towards the front of the stage, which caused the people in the front to be compressed," Houston Fire Chief Sam Peña told CNN Saturday morning. "People began to fall out, become unconscious.”

Houston mayor Sylvester Turner said the eight people who died were between the ages of 16 and 23.

The two-day festival was started in 2018 by rapper Travis Scott, who's originally from Houston.

“I'm absolutely devastated by what took place last night,” Scott wrote on social media. “My prayers go out to the families and all those impacted by what happened at Astroworld Festival."

Peña said more than 300 people were treated for injuries at the event, and 23 were taken to hospital. A 10-year-old remains in hospital in critical condition.

Peña added that some of the patients suffered cardiac arrests, but details about what exactly happened at the event remain unclear.
