The fun thing about film festival fashion is that the arrivals and photo calls are just as photographed as the big red carpets, which means there’s even more attire to consider. And at the Venice Film Festival, where celebrities are currently flocking in droves, arrivals often take place via water taxi, which adds some seasonally appropriate maritime flair. GQ is keeping an eye out for the biggest fits so far—formal, casual, and everything in between.
Timothée Chalamet
Though Denis Villeneuve’s Dune is out of competition at Venice, it’s still probably the most anticipated film of the festival. Ahead of the Friday premiere, star Timothée Chalamet rolled up to the Marco Polo Airport wearing a characteristically wild fit, including a Louis Vuitton tee, some massive Supreme eagle-print pants, and his favorite Isabel Marant high-tops.
Pedro Almodóvar
The always-fitted Pedro Almodóvar is at Venice to premiere his latest film Parallel Mothers, which stars his frequent red-carpet partner Penélope Cruz. The director made sure to really dress accordingly, offsetting his all-black Giorgio Armani look with some Prada sunglasses and a little studded box clutch. Fun!
Bong Joon-ho
Bong Joon-ho is the jury president at Venice this year, and he added a crucial accessory to his signature all-black suit: a handheld fan.
Israel Elejalde
Parallel Mothers star Israel Elejalde walked the red carpet in one of Dior designer Kim Jones’s sleek, single-button Tailleur Oblique suits. Very sleek.
Luca Guadagnino
Also on the Parallel Mothers carpet was director Luca Guadagnino, wearing a delightful white Brioni jacket. Nothing like Italy in the summertime…
Paul Schrader
A red Wayfarer. A white short-sleeve shirt with a black jean. Gold jewelry aplenty. As usual, The Card Counter director Paul Schrader kept things playful.
Alessandro Borghi
Italian actor Alessandro Borghi pulled up in his water taxi looking positively nautical in an easy white tee, an open vest, and a sockless Gucci loafer. Not to mention—have the GQ Grooming Gods caught wind of this look yet?
Benedict Cumberbatch
Like Borghi, The Power Of The Dog star Benedict Cumberbatch also opted for a white tee under his cloud-blue Richard James suit. Easy breezy!
Kirstin Dunst
Kirstin Dunst, like her The Power Of The Dog co-star, followed suit in an Armani set.
Matt Dillon
Matt Dillion, who stars in the festival opener Land of Dreams, kept things casual in shades and a printed Saint Laurent short-sleeve shirt.
Cynthia Erivo
Venice jury member Cynthia Erivo’s shredded jeans (with camo underlay?!), big Gucci glasses, and Janet Jackson tee assert that, yes, a film festival should be fun!
