Warning: Contains SPOILERS for Shang-Chi
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings producer Jonathan Schwartz revealed how the studio settled on Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) and Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) as the major Avengers cameos during the film's credits sequence. Outside of this brief scene, Shang-Chi essentially told an original story isolated from the rest of the higher-profile Avengers cast. As the first feature-length origin story from Marvel Studios in two years (the last being 2019's Captain Marvel), the film dedicates most of its screen time to the titular protagonist, Shang-Chi (Simu Liu), and his father, Wenwu (Tony Leung Chiu-Wai).
After defeating the interdimensional creature known as the Dweller-in-Darkness, Shang-Chi and his companion Katy (Awkwafina) are swiftly recruited by Wong (Benedict Wong) to analyze the mystical Ten Rings that Shang-Chi inherited from his father. During the first credits sequence, Wong reveals that the Rings act as a sort of beacon, calling out to someone (or something) unknown. Bruce Banner and Carol Danvers cameo in this scene as holograms to offer their best hypotheses regarding the Rings' origins. However, they are ultimately unable to come to a conclusion. As the two Avengers veterans sign off, Banner gives Shang-Chi and Katy a warm (and meta) welcome, telling them, "Welcome to the circus."
Jonathan Schwartz – who served as producer on the film alongside Marvel head Kevin Feige – recently talked with CinemaBlend to discuss the credits sequence's cameos. He says that the team "always had the idea for the scene," but they had to accommodate shifting schedules due to the coronavirus pandemic. Schwartz goes on to say that "a conversation with [himself] and Destin [Daniel Cretton] and Kevin [Feige]" ultimately determined the final result. Check out Schwartz's full comments below:
We always had the idea for the scene. It came together relatively early in the process. We ultimately weren't able to shoot it during principal photography for many reasons, but primarily because COVID shut us down, schedules changed, et cetera, So it got pushed to our additional photography period. And then at that point, it just became, ‘Alright, well, who were the characters that made sense?’ And that was a conversation with me and Destin and Kevin. And we sort of just had a call where we threw out our ideas and ended up where we ended up, which I couldn't be happier with.
Schwartz also reveals that the pandemic forced the crew to film the credits sequence during the production's additional photography period rather than during principal photography. Due to the volatile nature of pandemic era filmmaking, it's possible that there may have been other Avengers planned to cameo. It will definitely be interesting to see whether Bruce and Carol play a more prominent role in future storylines involving the Ten Rings or whether their inclusion was more of a logistical decision based on the actors' schedules.
Regardless of the scene's impact on future MCU projects, the duo's inclusion in the film was a welcome treat. In a movie that primarily relied on its own characters and mythology, having Bruce and Carol appear was a fun reminder that this is the same universe where a muscular purple alien nearly annihilated the universe using magical rocks only a year or two prior. If Shang-Chi is any indication about the quality of upcoming MCU films, fans have a lot to be excited about.
