"The Suicide Squad" Nabs $4M Previews - Dark Horizons

The Suicide Squad Nabs 4m Previews

What a difference five years can make.

Armed by a still famous marketing campaign, David Ayer’s critically reviled PG-13 “Suicide Squad” film opened in 2016 to a record-breaking $133.7 million weekend domestically and ended out its theatrical run with a worldwide total gross of $746 million.

This week’s critically acclaimed R-rated take on the comic with James Gunn’s “The Suicide Squad” is facing a whole different market – one ravaged by COVID-19 and the recent Delta variant impacting overseas markets heavily. Domestically cinemas are still on a slow uphill climb to recovery.

As a result, multiple outlets report that Gunn’s ‘Squad’ opened to $4.1 million in Thursday night previews and is now on track for an opening weekend of at least $30 million domestic and a further $40 million overseas opening weekend, quite possibly a good deal higher.

That preview number is easily the biggest R-rated movie launch since the pandemic began. The film also snagged a day-and-date release vis HBO Max where it became available last night.
