A new trailer for the upcoming Spider-Man: No Way Home was recently released. Many theories were proven true about this movie when Dr. Octopus from the Tobey Maguire Spider-Man movies made an appearance towards the end of the trailer.
As a fighting game fan that always has fighting games on the mind, I couldn't help but be reminded how Doc Ock was once cut from Marvel vs. Capcom 3 as a playable character upon seeing this scene.
"Speaking of characters that didn't make the cut, the biggest one of all was a certain enemy of Spider-Man's who has a bunch of arms coming out of his back," said Ryota Niitsuma, Producer for Marvel vs. Capcom 3. "He wasn't just a candidate, we worked on him for a very long time. He even has character art and a theme song we had to cut from the game."
Unfortunately, we never had the opportunity to hear Doc Ock's theme in Marvel vs. Capcom 3 despite it being completed. Spider-Man ended up being the only character from the Spider-Man franchise that made an appearance in Marvel vs. Capcom 3, so it's not really known how Spider-Man villain music would've sounded like in MvC3.
Rumor had it that character data for Doc Ock could be found on the disc for Marvel vs. Capcom 3. It seems that this information would be later removed from Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3's disc data.
It's widely believed that Doc Ock was removed due to technical difficulties involving his metal tentacles. This is obviously an attribute that really defines what the Spider-Man villain is all about, so it wasn't like the developers could just work around this.
Of course, Doc Ock didn't make an appearance in the next entry in the series, Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite, either. To this day, we've never had Doc Ock as a playable character in an official fighting game. Perhaps it could still happen someday, though it's clear that he'd be very complex for developers.
