Just nine days after he was officially announced as one of the two new permanent hosts of “Jeopardy!,” Mike Richards has confirmed in a statement that he will be stepping down.
The announcement comes following the resurfacing of disparaging remarks about marginalized groups Richards made on his podcast “The Randumb Show”. In addition, allegations against him of harassment and discrimination against models on “The Price Is Right” have also re-emerged.
In his statement, Richards suggests that the controversy had become “too much of a distraction for our fans,” and continuing on as host was “not the right move for the show.”
Production on the quiz show’s 38th season has been halted. Richards was to host the weekday syndicated series while actress Mayim Bialik remains onboard to host the show’s primetime and spin-off specials.
Both were among the guest hosts who stepped in after longtime host Alex Trebek’s death last year. It’s likely the show will once again rely on guest hosts as producers resume their search for a permanent host. LeVar Burton remains a fan favorite with many in Hollywood getting behind the widely-liked “Roots” and “Star Trek: The Next Generation” star to take over.
“Jeopardy!” is expected to return to air on September 13th.
