Prince Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, announced on Sunday the birth of their second child, daughter Lilibet “Lili” Diana Mountbatten-Windsor.

A spokesperson for Prince Harry and Meghan said the child was born on Friday at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital in California and weighed 7 lbs., 11 oz.

“Both mother and child are healthy and well, and settling in at home,” the spokesperson said.

The child’s first name, Lilibet, is a nod to the Queen’s nickname. Her middle name is in honour of her grandmother and Harry’s mother, the late Princess Diana of Wales, who died in a car crash in 1997.

Meghan and Harry also took to their Archewell website to share a personal message, writing, “On June 4, we were blessed with the arrival of our daughter, Lili. She is more than we could have ever imagined, and we remain grateful for the love and prayers we’ve felt from across the globe. Thank you for your continued kindness and support during this very special time for our family.”

The baby is the eighth in line to the British throne.

Within minutes of the birth announcement, well wishers around the world flocked to Twitter to congratulate the royal couple, who’ve had a momentous year.

In the wake of quitting royal duties, they gave an explosive interview with Oprah Winfrey in March. The couple described painful discussions about the colour of their first child’s skin and the intense pressures that led Meghan to contemplate suicide.
