The late Duke of Edinburgh who passed away on Friday aged 99, reportedly gave advice to Princess Diana as she navigated her new role. Tom Quinn, author of Kensington Palace: An Intimate Memoir from Queen Mary to Meghan Markle, told Fox news about the kind of support Philip gave to the Princess of Wales.
“Philip spent seven decades walking behind the queen both literally and metaphorically – but he was the backbone of the royals’ private life, supporting Diana during her most difficult periods,” said Mr Quinn.
“He also admonished his sons, including Prince Charles, when he felt their behaviour was not good enough.”
He added that at first, Philip was on Diana’s side when it was revealed that Charles was having an affair with his then ex-girlfriend, Camilla Parker Bowles.
In letters uncovered after Diana’s death in 1997, Prince Philip had reportedly written to Diana on multiple occasions, providing advice and support.
As quoted by Woman and Home magazine, Prince Philip wrote: “If invited, I will always do my utmost to help you and Charles to the best of my ability.
“But I am quite ready to concede that I have no talent as a marriage counsellor!”
In a separate letter, Philip said that he couldn’t understand Charles’ decision on being with Camilla.
“He told her he thought Charles was mad to have even thought of abandoning her,” said Mr Quinn.
