Awards show ceremonies in the past year have seen their ratings go off a cliff, and Sunday night’s 93rd Academy Awards ceremony proved no different.
In Nielsen Live+Same Day preliminary national numbers, an average of 9.85 million viewers tuned in on Sunday evening to watch the stripped-down version of the Oscars amidst the pandemic.
That’s a 58.3% viewer drop-off from last year, down by 13.75 million, with the ceremony scoring just a 1.9 rating among adults 18-49 in the fast national ratings – compared to last year’s 5.3 and 2019’s 7.7.
The record low is no surprise. The 2021 Golden Globes drew a mere 6.9 million viewers/1.5 rating, while the Grammys plunged nearly 53% compared to last year’s show. Awards show numbers have long been in decline, but the pandemic has accelerated that fast.
