Scarlett Johansson, Disney settle lawsuit over 'Black Widow' - CP24 Toronto's Breaking News

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Scarlett Johansson and the Walt Disney Co. on Thursday settled her lawsuit over the streaming release of “Black Widow,” bringing a swift end to what had begun as the first major fight between a studio and star over recent changes in rollout plans for films.

Johansson filed the lawsuit in Los Angeles Superior Court two months ago, saying the streaming release of the Marvel movie breached her contract and deprived her of potential earnings.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but the two sides released a joint statement in which they pledged to continue working together.

“I am happy to have resolved our differences with Disney,” said Johansson, who has played Natasha Romanoff aka Black Widow, in nine movies going back to 2010's “Iron Man 2.” “I'm incredibly proud of the work we've done together over the years and have greatly enjoyed my creative relationship with the team. I look forward to continuing our collaboration.”

Alan Bergman, chairman of Disney Studios Content, said he is “pleased that we have been able to come to a mutual agreement.”

“We appreciate her contributions to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and look forward to working together on a number of upcoming projects,” Bergman said.

The lawsuit said Johansson's contract guaranteed an exclusive theatrical release, with her potential earnings tied to the box office performance of the film.

But as it has with other recent releases since the coronavirus pandemic began, Disney released the film simultaneously in theaters and through its streaming service Disney+ for a $30 rental.

The rhetoric of the lawsuit and Disney's response suggested a long and ugly battle was ahead.

“In the months leading up to this lawsuit, Ms. Johansson gave Disney and Marvel every opportunity to right their wrong and make good on Marvel's promise,” the lawsuit said. “Disney intentionally induced Marvel's breach of the Agreement, without justification, in order to prevent Ms. Johansson from realizing the full benefit of her bargain with Marvel.”

Disney at the time said the lawsuit had “no merit whatsoever,” adding that it was “especially sad and distressing in its callous disregard for the horrific and prolonged global effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.”

Disney said the changed release plan “significantly enhanced her ability to earn additional compensation on top of the $20M she has received to date.”

Delayed more than a year because of COVID-19, “Black Widow” debuted to a what was then a pandemic-best of $80 million in North America and $78 million from international theaters on July 9. But theatrical grosses declined sharply after that. In its second weekend in release, the National Association of Theater Owners issued a rare statement criticizing the strategy.

Revised hybrid release strategies have occasionally led to public spats between stars, filmmakers and financiers who are unhappy with potential lost revenues and their lack of say in such strategies.

But none were as big or as public as Johansson's lawsuit.

Dr. Dre, Eminem, Kendrick Lamar highlight Super Bowl Halftime Show - TSN

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Mary J. Blige and Kendrick Lamar will perform for the first time on stage together at the Pepsi Super Bowl Halftime Show.

The NFL, Pepsi and Roc Nation announced Thursday that the five music icons will perform on Feb. 13 at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. Dre, Snoop Dogg and Lamar are Southern California natives.

Dre emerged from the West Coast gangster rap scene alongside Eazy-E and Ice Cube to help form the group N.W.A., which made a major mark in the hip-hop culture and music industry with controversial lyrics in the late 1980s. Dre is responsible for bringing forth rap stars such as Snoop Dogg, Eminem, 50 Cent and Lamar. Dre also produced Blige's No. 1 hit song “Family Affair.”

“The opportunity to perform at the Super Bowl Halftime show, and to do it in my own backyard, will be one of the biggest thrills of my career,” Dre said in a statement. The seven-time Grammy winner added that their halftime performance will be an “unforgettable cultural moment.”

The Super Bowl returns to the Los Angeles area for the first time since 1993. It’s the third year of collaboration between the NFL, Pepsi and Roc Nation.

Roc Nation and Emmy-nominated producer Jesse Collins will serve as co-producers of the halftime show. The game and halftime show will air live on NBC.

The five music artists have a combined 44 Grammys. Eminem has the most with 15.

Roc Nation founder Jay-Z said in a statement that their show will be “history in the making.”

Dre, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Blige and Lamar join a list of celebrated musicians who have played during Super Bowl halftime shows, including Beyoncé, Madonna, Coldplay, Katy Perry, U2, Lady Gaga, Michael Jackson, Jennifer Lopez, Shakira and most recently The Weeknd.

NFL and Pepsi will join together to support the launch of Regional School #1, a magnet high school in south Los Angeles. It’s set to open for students next fall as part of the Los Angeles Unified School District.

The high school is based on the USC Iovine and Young Academy, a program founded by Jimmy Iovine and Andre “Dr. Dre” Young. It will offer an educational model focused on the theme of integrated design, technology and entrepreneurship.

“This effort will help develop and inspire the next generation of entrepreneurs and innovators,” said Megan K. Reilly, the LA Unified Interim Superintendent. “We are excited about the additional opportunities this partnership will bring to our students.”

Venom 2 Projected For $60M Opening Weekend | Screen Rant - Screen Rant

Venom: Let There Be Carnage is projected to have a $60 million opening weekend. The highly anticipated sequel to 2018's Venom brings Tom Hardy back to star as Eddie Brock, but this time he will face one of Marvel's biggest villains, Carnage (Woody Harrelson). Sony has hopes that Venom 2 will be another big hit and continue the Marvel success it has had ever since they rebooted Spider-Man as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Tom Holland.

Expectations for the movie are high, especially after early reactions for Venom 2 were mostly positive. As viewers gear up to see the continuation of Venom's story, the sequel will attempt to replicate the original film's success at the box office. Venom was a surprise financial hit for Sony as it made over $850 million worldwide, and it made the sequel seem like a strong contender to earn $1 billion when it came out. Due to COVID-19 though, expectations for Venom 2's box office potential are understandably muted, but it is still projected to perform well.

Related: How No Spider-Man Changed Venom's Movie Origin

According to tracking shared by Deadline, projections for Venom: Let There Be Carnage have it opening to $60M domestically. The report notes that Sony's estimations are more conservative and have the sequel earning $40M in its opening weekend. However, others around Hollywood are predicting Venom 2 could open to more than $60M during its first three days of release, including opening night previews. The original Venom opened to $80M and set what was then a record opening weekend for October.

Carnage from Venom 2: Let There Be Carnage

Depending on where Venom: Let There Be Carnage's opening weekend officially falls, it will post one of the best openings for a movie in a post-COVID-19 landscape. Black Widow set the record with $80M in May, and both Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and F9 opened above these current projections for Venom 2. This should mean that the movie claims the fourth-highest opening weekend post-pandemic. If it over-performs, Tom Hardy's sequel could surpass F9 or Shang-Chi. Meanwhile, an opening closer to Sony's estimates might put it behind A Quiet Place Part II.

There is plenty of hope within the movie industry that Venom 2 will be the latest superhero movie to pop at the box office, and this tracking backs it up. It was Shang-Chi's box office performance that raised Sony's confidence that their Marvel movie will perform well and brought them to move up the film's release date by a few weeks. As long as the interest from audiences to see more big-budget comic book movies continues, Venom: Let There Be Carnage should be another win for Sony. How big of a hit it becomes will be fascinating to follow now.

Disney World opened 50 years ago; these workers never left - CP24 Toronto's Breaking News

Mike Schneider, The Associated Press
Published Tuesday, September 28, 2021 1:44PM EDT

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) - Applying to be one of the first workers at Walt Disney World, high school graduate George Kalogridis made a split-second decision that set the course for his life: he picked a room where prospective hotel workers were being hired.

Chuck Milam got a tip about a job opening from a transplanted Disney executive whose new house he was landscaping. Earliene Anderson jumped at the chance to take a job at the new Disney theme park in Florida, having fallen in love with the beauty of Disneyland in California during a trip two years earlier.

At the time, the three were among the 6,000 employees who opened the Magic Kingdom at Disney World to the public for the first time on Oct. 1, 1971. Now, they are among two dozen from that first day still employed at the theme park resort as it celebrates its 50th anniversary on Friday.

Over those decades, Disney World added three more theme parks, two dozen additional hotels and grew to have a workforce of 77,000 employees as it helped Orlando become the most visited place in the U.S. before the pandemic.

What never changed was the original employees' devotion to the pixie dust, the dream machine created by Walt Disney and his Imagineers.

“Disney has been my love, and it still is,” Anderson said recently before starting her shift in merchandising at a Magic Kingdom hotel. “I love Disney.”

The employees who make up the 50-year club say the theme park resort has allowed them to grow their careers and try on new hats. Kalogridis worked his way up to be president of Walt Disney World and Disneyland in California. Milam went from a warehouse worker to a buyer of spare parts for rides and shows.

Forrest Bahruth joined the workforce at Disney World in January 1971 as a show director, responsible for staging and choreographing parades and shows. He was also given the opportunity to help open other Disney theme parks around the world over the past five decades.

“There are people all over the world who get up to go work. They're unhappy about it. They don't really like their jobs,” Bahruth said. “As you can tell from us, there's an enthusiasm. We are privileged to be at a place where we love what we do.”

There was no guarantee that Disney World was going to be a success 50 years ago. Walt Disney, the pioneering animator and entrepreneur whose name graces the Florida resort, had died in 1966, just a year after announcing plans for “the East Coast Disneyland.” The company had quietly acquired 27,000 acres (11,000 hectares) of scrub land outside Orlando for around $5 million via secret land purchases using fake names and shell companies.

The job of shepherding the project to Opening Day fell to his brother, Roy Disney, who with other company officials convinced the Florida Legislature to create a quasi-governmental agency that would allow Disney to self-govern when it came to matters of infrastructure and planning. Roy died almost three months after Disney World opened.

Just weeks before opening, construction at the Magic Kingdom was controlled chaos, and it seemed impossible that it would all come together in time.

“It was like an army of ants. Everything was under construction. Interiors were still being put in. Roofing was still being put on top,” Bahruth said. “There was painting, landscaping. Things were arriving by the moment. It was like trucks going everywhere.”

Bahruth rehearsed performers through parade choreography down Main Street, which cut through the center of the Magic Kingdom and resembled a turn-of-the-century small town from Walt Disney's childhood. Even though he was a busser, Kalogridis was drafted into laying down sod outside the hotel he was working in, hours before Disney World's grand opening.

Two things have stuck in the memories of the longtime employees from that opening day. The first was the photo. It was an image of thousands of Disney World workers standing in front of the iconic Cinderella Castle with Mickey Mouse and other costumed characters holding hands in front. Two weeks later, it was featured on the cover of Life magazine.

“They brought all the characters up, staged them first, and then they tried to keep all the different workers together based on the color of their costumes,” Milam said. “If you were from Fantasyland and in yellow, you would go over there.”

The second was the parade. It featured a 1,076-member marching band conducted by Meredith Wilson, the composer of the Broadway show, “The Music Man.” There were 4,000 Disney entertainers marching through the theme park, a mass choir and trumpeters from the United States Army Band. Hundreds of white doves were released into the air, and less environmentally friendly, so were thousands of multi-colored balloons.

“It was the biggest thing I had ever seen,” Bahruth said.

Only around 10,000 visitors showed up on that first day - which at today's much larger Walt Disney World would represent about 90 minutes' worth of visitors entering. It wouldn't be until Thanksgiving 1971, almost three months later, when Disney executives had an answer about whether their new resort would be a success; that's when cars trying to get into the Magic Kingdom stretched for miles down the interstate.

“It was very clear after that first Thanksgiving, that the public definitely liked what we were doing,” Kalogridis said. “That first Thanksgiving, that was the moment.”

James Bond: Daniel Craig Recalls Breaking Dave Bautista's Nose Then Fleeing In Terror - IGN - IGN

Daniel Craig has recalled the moment that he broke Dave Bautista's nose on the set of the 2015 James Bond film Spectre before promptly fleeing the scene in fear.

Ahead of the upcoming release of No Time To Die, Craig appeared as a guest on The Graham Norton Show, where he divulged the details of some of the worst James Bond injuries he's experienced. The 007 actor recounted an incident that occurred on the set of Spectre while filming the memorable train fight sequence between Bond and Bautista's assassin Mr. Hinx.

"I broke his nose. I didn't do it deliberately. Clearly, it was a mistake," Craig said, reflecting on the choreographed clash. "He's a big guy, he's a professional wrestler. You really wouldn't mess with him. I threw this punch and hit him on the nose. I heard this crack and I was like 'Oh God no' and ran away. I thought he was going to come after me but he was so sweet."

"He's a lot tougher than I am," Craig said of Bautista, recalling how he set his nose back in place to continue production. The Bond actor admitted that Bautista was being "gentle" with him during one part of the fight scene, so he encouraged his co-star to be more forceful in the brawl, but it actually resulted in a serious knee injury that temporarily halted production.

"I ended up on the wall, but my knee was over here somewhere," Craig explained, gesturing some distance away from him. "I knew and it was horrible because if anyone's had an injury, you just know in your head that something is really wrong... I was out and then we went back and we re-filmed it. I had to film it with a brace on. It was a struggle to do it."

Craig first portrayed Bond in the 2006 film Casino Royale. He reprised the role in 2008's Quantum of Solace, 2012's Skyfall and 2015's Spectre, all of which have collectively grossed more than $3.1 billion at the worldwide box office. Craig is officially bidding farewell to the 007 franchise with No Time To Die, which is the longest James Bond movie to date.

New Fall Movies 2021: 40 Films to Look Forward To

The star has suffered numerous scrapes and breaks across the five films in which he has portrayed the 007 Agent, including No Time To Die. "I was literally walking down a plank," Craig said, sharing the story of his most recent ankle break. "I wasn't even running, I wasn't even doing anything action-based. I just walked down, slipped, and fell over. It was so stupid."

Craig's final outing as Bond is almost upon us, with the world premiere of No Time To Die set to take place at the Royal Albert Hall on September 28 following a number of delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The film will then feature its theatrical release in the UK on September 30 before releasing in the US on October 8 and in Australia on November 11.

New Britney Spears documentary paints dark picture of early legal fight for control of singer's life - CBC.ca

The latest documentary about pop star Britney Spears recalls the complicated legal battle the singer faced after her father began controlling her life under a conservatorship set up in 2008, and some of the people who tried to help her regain control.

Britney vs. Spears, by director Erin Lee Carr and journalist Jenny Eliscu is a 90-minute production that Netflix aired for the first time on Tuesday.

In one of its bombshell revelations, Eliscu, who has written numerous times about Spears for Rolling Stone magazine, reveals how she became more of a "Good Samaritan" than a journalist in early 2009 when she tried to help the singer hire her own lawyer, to replace one the court had appointed.

The effort began after she talked to Sam Lutfi, who became Spears's manager after meeting her in a nightclub shortly before she was put under the conservatorship that gave Jamie Spears the legal right to oversee and make decisions about the singer's finances, health and personal life.

Two male friends were 'persona non grata'

Lutfi came up with a plan along with another friend of the singer's, Adnan Ghalib, to draw up paperwork for Spears to sign for a court filing. Ghalib was a photographer the singer had befriended in 2007 while in the middle of her divorce from Kevin Federline. Spears and Ghalib dated for about a year.

By 2009, Lutfi and Ghalib were "persona non grata," Eliscu says. "They had been completely forbidden from having access to Britney," so the journalist stepped in to deliver paperwork aimed at securing new legal counsel.

Eliscu says she met with Spears in the bathroom of a Los Angeles hotel on Jan. 21, 2009, and then passed the paperwork to the singer from beneath one of the stalls.

Thwarted in attempt to choose legal counsel

At the outset of the conservatorship, in early February 2008, Spears tried to retain trial lawyer Adam Streisand to represent her, instead of the court-appointed Sam Ingham, described by another lawyer in the documentary as seemingly ineffectual over the years in gaining more liberties for the singer.

But after Streisand came to court to make it official, a judge in Los Angeles told him the singer could not hire her own lawyer.

"When I told the judge what Britney wanted, the judge said, 'I have a report that says she does not have the capacity to retain counsel and have an attorney-client relationship,' " he says.

Dementia given as reason for legal arrangement

In another bombshell moment, although previously reported, the filmmakers talk about one of the court documents they obtained, filed at the start of the conservatorship, explaining what kind of impairment a potential conservatee might have.

The document shows a ticked box beside the words "orders related to dementia placement or treatment."

People have described Jamie Spears as "intimidating," Carr says in the documentary. She further disparages him as a man with "financial mismanagement of his own life."

'Hybrid business model'

In one court document offered up to viewers, Jamie Spears appears to justify generous compensation as part of overseeing a conservatorship.

"This conservatorship should be viewed more as a hybrid business model. If declarant performed the same services, with the same results, in a business setting, his fees would have been in the millions of dollars," the document reads.

In late 2008, Britney wrote a letter, in third-person narrative, mentioning her generosity to her family, and how "people controlling her life have made $3 million this year."

Carr said the documentary was two and a half years in the making. The Los Angeles Times says Carr did not collaborate with Spears, but the director wanted the film to be "the definitive place to understand the beginning, middle and hopefully what we will find out as the end of this saga."

Britney Spears pleads for end to conservatorship

After years of silence, Britney Spears pleaded with a judge to end her court-appointed conservatorship. The star said it allowed her father to control virtually every aspect of her life. 2:02

Britney vs. Spears is the third documentary released this year detailing the 39-year-old singer's legal to fight to dissolve the conservatorship.

Framing Britney Spears, released in February, documented her rise to fame and sought to expose the media's portrayal of the singer as intrusive, mocking and condescending, and at times declaring she was on the edge of a mental breakdown after she filed for divorce from Federline in late 2006, leading to a difficult custody battle in 2007.

The sequel Controlling Britney Spears, which premiered Sept. 24, focused on her father and others who ran the conservatorship, and included allegations that she has been under intense surveillance.

Jamie Spears agreed to step down as a conservator of his daughter's estate in August.

Spears will have her own lawyer, legally approved over the summer, when the case to dissolve the legal arrangement returns to court in Los Angeles on Wednesday.

R&B singer R Kelly convicted in sex trafficking trial - Al Jazeera English

R Kelly faces the possibility of decades in prison for crimes including violating an anti-sex trafficking US law.

R&B superstar R Kelly has been convicted in a sex trafficking trial in the United States after decades of avoiding criminal responsibility for numerous allegations of misconduct with young women and children.

A jury of seven men and five women on Monday found Kelly, 54, guilty of all nine counts, including racketeering, on their second day of deliberations.

Kelly wore a face mask below black-rimmed glasses and remained motionless with eyes downcast, as the verdict was read in federal court in Brooklyn.

Prosecutors alleged that the entourage of managers and aides who helped Kelly meet girls – and keep them obedient and quiet – amounted to a criminal enterprise. Two people have been charged with Kelly in a separate federal case pending in Chicago.

He faces the possibility of decades in prison for crimes, including violating the Mann Act, an anti-sex trafficking law that prohibits taking anyone across state lines “for any immoral purpose”. Sentencing is scheduled for May 4.

One of Kelly’s lawyers, Deveraux Cannick, said he was disappointed and hoped to appeal. “I think I’m even more disappointed the government brought the case in the first place, given all the inconsistencies,” Cannick said.

Several accusers testified in lurid detail during the trial, alleging that Kelly subjected them to perverse and sadistic whims when they were underage.

For years, the public and news media seemed to be more amused than horrified by allegations of inappropriate relationships with minors, starting with Kelly’s illegal marriage to the R&B phenom Aaliyah in 1994 when she was just 15.

His records and concert tickets kept selling. Other artists continued to record his songs, even after he was arrested in 2002 and accused of making a recording of himself sexually abusing and urinating on a 14-year-old girl.

Widespread public condemnation did not come until a widely watched docuseries called, Surviving R. Kelly, helped make his case a signifier of the #MeToo era. This gave voice to accusers who wondered if their stories were previously ignored because they were Black women.

“To the victims in this case, your voices were heard and justice was finally served,” said acting US Attorney Jacquelyn Kasulis on Monday.

Gloria Allred, a lawyer for some of Kelly’s accusers, said outside the court that “Mr Kelly is the worst” of all the predators she has gone after – a list that includes Harvey Weinstein and Jeffrey Epstein.

At the trial, several of Kelly’s accusers testified without using their real names to protect their privacy. Jurors were shown homemade videos of Kelly engaging in sex acts that prosecutors said were not consensual. The defence labelled the accusers “groupies” and “stalkers”.

Kelly, born Robert Sylvester Kelly, has been jailed without bail since 2019. The New York case is only part of the legal peril facing the singer. He also has pleaded not guilty to sex-related charges in Illinois and Minnesota. Trial dates in those cases have yet to be set.

NEW YORK -- R. Kelly, the R&B superstar known for his anthem “I Believe I Can Fly,” was convicted Monday in a sex trafficking trial after decades of avoiding criminal responsibility for numerous allegations of misconduct with young women and children.

A jury of seven men and five women found Kelly, 54, guilty of all nine counts, including racketeering, on their second day of deliberations. Kelly, wearing a face mask, remained motionless, eyes downcast as the verdict was read in federal court in Brooklyn.

Prosecutors alleged that the entourage of managers and aides who helped Kelly meet girls - and keep them obedient and quiet - amounted to a criminal enterprise. Two people have been charged with Kelly in a separate federal case that's pending in Chicago.

Kelly was also convicted of criminal counts accusing him of violating the Mann Act, which makes it illegal to take anyone across state lines “for any immoral purpose.”

“To the victims in this case, your voices were heard and justice was finally served,” Acting U.S. Attorney Jacquelyn Kasulis said.

Peter Fitzhugh, a Homeland Security investigations agent, said the verdict brought an end to Kelly's “decade-long reign of terror over many vulnerable girls, boys and young women.”

Kelly faces up to 20 years in prison. Sentencing is scheduled for May 4.

Kelly lawyer Deveraux Cannick said he was disappointed by the verdict.

“I think I'm even more disappointed the government brought the case in the first place given all the inconsistencies,” Cannick said.

Several accusers testified in lurid detail during the trial, alleging that Kelly subjected them to perverse and sadistic whims when they were underage.

Gloria Allred, a lawyer for some of Kelly's accusers, said that of all the predators she's gone after - a list including Harvey Weinstein and Jeffrey Epstein - “Mr. Kelly is the worst.”

“R. Kelly thought that he could get away with all of this, but he didn't,” Allred said outside the courthouse. “Despite the fact that he thought he could control all this, he was wrong.”

For years, the public and news media seemed to be more amused than horrified by allegations of inappropriate relationships with minors, starting with Kelly's illegal marriage to the R&B phenom Aaliyah in 1994 when she was just 15.

His records and concert tickets kept selling. Other artists continued to record his songs, even after he was arrested in 2002 and accused of making a recording of himself sexually abusing and urinating on a 14-year-old girl.

Widespread public condemnation didn't come until a widely watched docuseries “Surviving R. Kelly” helped make his case a signifier of the #MeToo era, and gave voice to accusers who wondered if their stories were previously ignored because they were Black women.

At the trial, several of Kelly's accusers testified without using their real names to protect their privacy and prevent possible harassment by the singer's fans. Jurors were shown homemade videos of Kelly engaging in sex acts that prosecutors said were not consensual.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Maria Cruz Melendez argued that Kelly was a serial abuser who “maintained control over these victims using every trick in the predator handbook.”

The defense labeled the accusers “groupies” and “stalkers.”

Cannick questioned why the alleged victims stayed in relationships with Kelly if they thought they were being exploited.

“You made a choice,” Cannick told one woman who testified, adding, “You participated of your own will.”

Kelly, born Robert Sylvester Kelly, has been jailed without bail since in 2019. The trial was delayed by the coronavirus pandemic and Kelly's last-minute shakeup of his legal team.

When it finally started on Aug. 18, prosecutors painted the singer as a pampered man-child and control freak. His accusers said they were under orders to call him “Daddy,” expected to jump and kiss him anytime he walked into a room, and to cheer only for him when he played pickup basketball games in which they said he was a ball hog.

The accusers alleged that they also were ordered to sign nondisclosure forms and were subjected to threats and punishments such as violent spankings if they broke what one referred to as “Rob's rules.” Some said they believed the videotapes he shot of them having sex would be used against them if they exposed what was happening.

Among the other more troubling tableaus: Kelly keeping a gun by his side while he berated one of his accusers as a prelude to forcing her to give him oral sex in a Los Angeles music studio; Kelly giving several accusers herpes without disclosing he had an STD; Kelly coercing a teenage boy to join him for sex with a naked girl who emerged from underneath a boxing ring in his garage; and Kelly shooting a shaming video of one alleged victim showing her smearing feces on her face as punishment for breaking his rules.

Some of the most harrowing testimony came from a woman who said Kelly took advantage of her in 2003 when she was an unsuspecting radio station intern. She testified he whisked her to his Chicago recording studio, where she was kept locked up and was drugged before he sexually assaulted her while she was passed out.

When she realized she was trapped, “I was scared. I was ashamed. I was embarrassed,” she said.

She said one of R. Kelly's employees warned her to keep her mouth shut about what had happened.

Other testimony focused on Kelly's relationship with Aaliyah. One of the final witnesses described seeing him sexually abusing her around 1993, when Aaliyah was only 13 or 14.

Jurors also heard testimony about a fraudulent marriage scheme hatched to protect Kelly after he feared he had impregnated Aaliyah. Witnesses said they were married in matching jogging suits using a license falsely listing her age as 18; he was 27 at the time.

Aaliyah, whose full name was Aaliyah Dana Haughton, worked with Kelly, who wrote and produced her 1994 debut album, “Age Ain't Nothing But A Number.” She died in a plane crash in 2001 at age 22.

In at least one instance, Kelly was accused of abusing a victim around the time he was under investigation in a child pornography case in Chicago. He was acquitted at trial in 2008.

For the Brooklyn trial, U.S. District Judge Ann Donnelly barred people not directly involved in the case from the courtroom in what she called a coronavirus precaution. Reporters and other spectators had to watch on a video feed from another room in the same building.

The New York case is only part of the legal peril facing the singer. He also has pleaded not guilty to sex-related charges in Illinois and Minnesota. Trial dates in those cases have yet to be set.

Extreme Rules 2021 Results: Live Updates, Match Card, And Surprises - GameSpot

Things are looking to get extreme this evening, as WWE's Extreme Rules PPV is coming to your house. This year's installment is taking place at the Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio. As the PPV airs on Peacock, you can check out our live results for all the matches as the event airs below.

Extreme Rules could mark the day that the Bloodline loses all of their titles. The Usos will face The Street Profits for the Smackdown Tag Team Championship and Roman Reigns will face "The Demon" Finn Bálor for the Universal Championship. Could this mean the end of Reigns being "the head of the table?" Extreme Rules will also mark the rematch between Becky Lynch and Bianca Belair for the Smackdown Women's Championship. At Summerslam, Lynch made her surprise return to WWE and squashed Belair for the title after a cheap shot. Hopefully, this rematch offers a bit more for the audience, as both these women are exceptional wrestlers.

If you're looking to join in on the fun for Extreme Rules, you'll need to subscribe to Peacock--or WWE Network if you live outside of the US. There is a free tier for Peacock; however, you'll need to subscribe to Peacock Premium ($5 a month) or Peacock Premium Plus ($10 a month) in order to live stream the PPV. The difference between the two is that Premium Plus is not ad-supported. However, both tiers of Peacock play the same stream of WWE's Extreme Rules.

WWE Extreme Rules 2021 match card:

  • Charlotte Flair (c) vs. Alexa Bliss (Raw Women's Championship)
  • Damian Priest (c) vs. Sheamus vs. Jeff Hardy (United States Championship)
  • Becky Lynch (c) vs. Bianca Belair (Smackdown Women's Championship)
  • The Usos (c) vs. The Street Profits (Smackdown Tag Team Championship)
  • Roman Reigns vs. "The Demon" Finn Bálor (Extreme Rules for the Universal Championship)
  • New Day vs. Bobby Lashley, AJ Styles, and Omos
  • Liv Morgan vs. Carmella [KICKOFF SHOW]

There are plenty of championships on the line during the evening, and some extreme stipulations. This includes Roman Reigns taking on The Demon in an extreme rules match. Anything goes during this bout, and Reigns will need the help, as The Demon persona of Finn Bálor can be quite beast to deal with. This is one of the many highly-anticipated matches of the evening.

If you're waiting for Extreme Rules to begin, you can pass the time by listening to the latest to the latest episode of GameSpot's wrestling podcast, Wrestle Buddies. This week, Mat Elfring and Chris E. Hayner predict all the matches for Extreme Rules. The duo are joined by their sophisticated AI robot PredictionBot 3000, who allegedly is never wrong. Check out the episode above.

Below, you'll find live updates and results for Extreme Rules as it airs on Peacock. Additionally, there will be notes for all the matches as well.

Liv Morgan vs. Carmella

Liv Morgan wins by pin.

Peacock is having some fun audio issues to kickoff the Kickoff Show match. Extreme Rules is playing both English and Spanish audio feeds over each other. It's a cacophony of commentary. It is incredibly distracting, as you can't make out what anyone is saying as everyone is unsuspectedly talking over each other. Luckily, it seems like the problem was fixed a couple minutes into the match. I take that back. The dual commentary has returned.

Eventually, the issue was fixed, which seemed to just be a problem for Peacock users. Morgan looked great and came away with a decisive victory. Carmella also had some great moments where she shined. This match would have been a lot better if there weren't audio issues. Regardless, this was a solid opener for Extreme Rules.

New Day vs. Bobby Lashley, AJ Styles, and Omos

Big E pins Bobby Lashley

During the entrances, instead of the Spanish commentary team, we got to hear from the French commentary team. When the match actually began, it was English only, but for how long? So far, the audio issues are a real "Horror Show." Remember when that was a thing? This match was booked during the Kickoff Show during a confrontation between the six men, and it's great to see the New Day working together again in a PPV match. Seeing the great Bobby Lashley get a classic Unicorn Stampede brings me unbridled joy. That's how a lot of this match played out. We got a lot of "greatest hits" moments from the New Day mixed with some incredible moments. On top of that, it's a match that highlighted the strengths of every single wrestler in the ring, and the crowd was super into it, only making it so much more fun to watch.

The Usos (c) vs. The Street Profits

(Smackdown Tag Team Championship)

The Usos win by pin.

Hey, at least this match didn't start off with multiple commentaries playing over each other. A bit of a slow start on this match, and as the match progressed, there was a lot of back and forth tagging, making it a bit tough to figure out who was legal at times. Montez Ford put on a high-flying show here, with some fantastic spots. I had no clue anyone could get that might height in the air from the top rope. Ford is a high-flying magician. And as good as The Street Profits looked during this match, The Usos ended up coming out on top. Personally, I think this would have been a good night to have The Profits take the tag titles, but apparently, this wasn't their night. Regardless, this was a solid and fun match. Two great tag matches to kick off the PPV.

Charlotte Flair (c) vs. Alexa Bliss

(Raw Women's Championship)

Charlotte Flair wins by pin.

Alexa Bliss is fantastic at owning this current character she's portraying. It's entertaining and hard to take your eyes off of her performance. The match boils down to Charlotte's power vs. Alexa's tenacity, which plays to their obvious strengths. However, it did become a two-count pin-a-thon--back and forth and back and forth. It was tedious. Charlotte ended up winning, retaining the title, which is fine. The fighting after the match was brought on by Charlotte destroying Lilly, and Charlotte tossed Alexa onto and off the announcer's table. It felt incredibly anti-climactic for a moment, as the camera zoomed in on the destroyed Lilly in the ring. Alexa ran back in and screamed and emoted, completely broken down and foaming at the mouth. The moment felt a bit long. Nothing really happened, aside from Alexa looking tormented.

Damian Priest (c) vs. Sheamus vs. Jeff Hardy

(United States Championship)

Damian Priest pins Sheamus.

This match was a lot more fun than I expected it to be. This is how triple threats should go. It was a nice build throughout the match, which led to a lot of huge moments towards the end of the bout. We also got a really funny moment of Sheamus on the top rope mocking Jeff Hardy. Ultimately, Priest retained his title and continues his dominance as the United States Champion.

Becky Lynch (c) vs. Bianca Belair

(Smackdown Women's Championship)

Bianca Belair wins due to DQ from Sasha Banks. Becky Lynch retains the title.

There was a fear, going into this, that we'd have another squash match, with Lynch walking away with the title after less than 30 seconds. What we got was a fantastic match that rebuilt Belair as a dominant threat for the Smackdown Women's Championship. Belair showed off numerous feats of strength, and Lynch played the heel who wants to win over the crowd exceptionally well. This is the Summerslam match we should have gotten--that is up until the ending. The match ended with Sasha Banks showing up and attacking Belair, giving Belair the win but not the championship. This is obviously leading up to a triple threat match between the three women at the next PPV. The match itself was great, but the finish was a bummer as it's just another example of Belair getting the short end of the stick.

8.5/10

Roman Reigns vs. "The Demon" Finn Bálor

(Extreme Rules for the Universal Championship)

Roman Reigns wins by pin

This match was all over the place. Setting aside the fact that we were hearing "The Demon" coming from the commentary team non-stop for the duration of the match--the most annoying thing in the world--things finally got extreme with an actual extreme rules match that delivered on what we were promised. It was a solid match up until the ending. The Usos, as expected, came down to attack Balor. Everyone was taken out, and then, Balor's intro started playing and he was flopping on the ground to the heartbeat to gain and extra life. It was the weirdest and maybe the lamest moment of the evening. However, what followed was Balor beating up Reigns while Balor's theme music played, which was the most epic moment of the evening by far. Balor got on the top rope, about to win the match, and the ropes snapped and Reigns got the pin and the win. It's Balor's first loss as "The Demon" in WWE. It feels like it destroyed that character, which felt like a parody of itself in this match. Wrestling-wise, it was great, but the final moments of this match were all over the place.

Kristin Cavallari is wowing fans with her latest Instagram photo.

On Saturday, the reality star and Uncommon James founder posted a sultry, sun-soaked shot of herself appearing seemingly topless — or wearing a strapless bikini top that's out of frame — while posing in a swimming pool, the sea behind her providing an idyllic backdrop.

"Sorry I haven't responded to you," the 34-year-old mom of three cheekily captioned the sexy shot, which shows her sporting sunglasses, earrings and wet locks.

According to the former Laguna Beach star's Instagram Stories, she's currently on vacation at an undisclosed beach destination. Cavallari, who has recently been romantically linked to country music singer Chase Rice, posted a photo of two cocktails along with a "vacation mode" caption.

WWE star Brie Bella was among those responding to Cavallari's swimming pool shoot with flame emojis, though some commenters suggested that the star's message may have had a pointed meaning. Cavallari is rumored to have recently fallen out with singer and actress Jana Kramer after the latter was spotted on an apparent date with Cavallari's ex-husband, Jay Cutler. Cavallari and Cutler, who share custody of their two sons and one daughter, announced their split in April 2020.

"She has disengaged and it suits her," Cavallari's best friend and hairstylist, Justin Anderson, commented underneath his famous pal's photo.

'Dear Evan Hansen' opens 2nd to 'Shang-Chi' at box office - Entertainment News - Castanet.net

“Dear Evan Hansen” may have been a hit on Broadway, but the filmed adaptation of the Tony-winning show is off to a slow start at the box office in its first weekend in theaters. The Universal musical that’s playing exclusively in theaters grossed an estimated $7.5 million from 3,364 locations, according to studio estimates on Sunday.

First place again went to Disney and Marvel’s “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” which added $13.3 million in ticket sales in North America, bringing its domestic total to $196.5 million. The superhero pic has topped the charts for four consecutive weekends and this weekend surpassed “Black Widow” to become the highest domestic earner of the pandemic.

With little in the way of high-profile competition this weekend, “Dear Evan Hansen’s” $7.3 million was enough to land it in second place. While critics were less than impressed, audiences that did turn out this weekend were fans and gave it an A- CinemaScore. Women made up an estimated 62% of the audience according to exit polls. Directed by Stephen Chbosky and written by Steven Levenson, “Dear Evan Hansen” is about a high school student with social anxiety disorder.

“We are tremendously proud of ‘Dear Evan Hansen’ and everything about it,” said Universal’s head of distribution Jim Orr. “With an exceptional film and great audience scores, we think that’ll lead to a better than normal run at the domestic box office.”

Despite its prestigious pedigree and star-studded cast including Julianne Moore and Amy Adams, “Dear Evan Hansen” has become somewhat of a punching bag on social media since its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival earlier this month. At the heart of the jokes is the fact that the film has a 27-year-old Ben Platt, who originated the role, playing a teenager.

The single-digit opening weekend remindedsome of “Cats” which opened to $6.6 million in December 2019. But “Dear Evan Hansen” cost significantly less — $28 million vs. $95 million — in addition to the fact that “Cats” launched to worse reviews in a pre-pandemic environment. There is also “The Greatest Showman” exception. The Hugh Jackman musical defied all box office logic in 2017 and 2018 when it opened to a deathly $8.8 million but went on to gross over $434.9 million globally. Justin Paul and Benj Pasek were the songwriting duo behind both “The Greatest Showman” and “Dear Evan Hansen.”

Bigger blockbusters are coming to North American theaters starting in October, with the “Venom” sequel out this upcoming Friday, the James Bond film “No Time to Die” following on Oct. 8 and “Dune” on Oct. 22.
