Tony Leung Was a Master Class in Acting Preparation During ‘Shang-Chi’ Production - Hollywood Reporter
Hong Kong legend Tony Leung required little-to-no direction for his scenes in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings because he made it a point to observe everything that occurred before the cameras were rolling.
In a profile on the iconic Asain actor published Tuesday in GQ, Shang-Chi director Destin Daniel Cretton marveled (no pun) at Leung’s preparation for his first starring role in an American film. On day one, Leung asked that his chair be placed near the camera. And he repeated the request every day, according to the profile.
“He would never be on his phone,” Cretton told GQ. “He would just come and sit all day, watching everything that we’re doing — what shot we’re setting up, what we’re doing with the stand-ins. And by the time it was ready to go, I’d literally have nothing to tell him. Initially, I’d be like, ‘Okay, here’s what we’re thinking,’ and he’d say, ‘Oh,’ very politely, ‘yeah, I know. I’ve been watching this whole time.’ ”
Related Stories
For one of his larger action scenes (which apparently did not make the final cut) Leung was so fantastic on the first take, Cretton was a bit flabbergasted, he told GQ. To producer Jonathan Schwartz the director said, “I don’t even know what to go tell him because we don’t have to do another take. There’s really no reason to.”
The award-winning Leung, an international superstar, rarely has played a villain, which is what made his Marvel character Wenwu, aka The Mandarin so intriguing to him, he told GQ.
“Frankly, I couldn’t imagine someone in the real world with superpowers,” he told the magazine. “But I can imagine someone like him who is an underdog, who is a failure of a father. On the one hand, he’s a bad father, but on the other, I just see him as someone who loves his family deeply. I don’t think he knows how to love himself.”
Leung explained how he drew from his personal life with his father to better understand the complexities of his Marvel character. “I didn’t know how to deal with people after my father left me,” he said. “When you’re a kid, everybody’s talking about their father, their family, how happy they are, how great their father is. I think from that time I stopped communicating with people. And I became very suppressed.”
Going to the cinema with his mother is where his worries would melt away and where he would be inspired to try acting years later.

Mike Richards is now out as executive producer of 'Jeopardy!' too - CTV News
Mike Richards is out as executive producer of "Jeopardy!" and "Wheel of Fortune," Sony, the company behind the two shows, announced Tuesday.
The news comes after a turbulent past month for "Jeopardy!" in which Richards was first named its new host and then stepped down about a week later amid controversies which began over his having been been named in multiple discrimination lawsuits. The Ringer also had surfaced derogatory comments he made on a podcast, for which he apologized.
Suzanne Prete, executive vice president of business and strategy at "Jeopardy!" and "Wheel of Fortune," emailed staff the news on Tuesday.
"We had hoped that when Mike stepped down from the host position at Jeopardy! it would have minimized the disruption and internal difficulties we have all experienced these last few weeks," Prete wrote. "That clearly has not happened."
Prete said in her email that Michael Davies will help with production on an interim basis.
"Michael and I will work together with all of you in the weeks ahead to ensure that production remains on schedule and we do not miss a beat as we head into the new season," Prete wrote. "I know this has been a challenging time for the entire team, and I want to thank you all for your cooperation and professionalism over these last few weeks."ved.

Kim Kardashian slammed for listening to Kanye Wests Donda album on mute - Geo News
Kim Kardashian is being trolled for listening to ex-husband Kanye West's Donda album on mute.
Over the weekend, the KUWTK star shared screen graphs of West's new album with their voices turned down. Kim shares four children with West.
The 40-year-old played songs from Hurricane to Ok Ok, Pt. 2 on her iPhone.
Twitter was quick to realize Kim's blunder and immediately criticized her.
“kim really said kanye’s music sounds [so much] better when it’s on mute,” one fan wrote on Twitter.
“kim kardashian posting screenshots of her listening to kanye’s new album on MUTE is taking me out,” another joked.
Kim then deleted the muted screen shots and replaced them with a new one. The damage however had already been done.

The focus is on how we communicate today, as many of us are called to be better listeners and put ourselves in the shoes of others. Weighing the pros and cons around a decision will be the best approach to take rather than jumping to conclusions or rushing headfirst into a plan or option. Getting helpful feedback or advice is also encouraged, as others could have a piece of information or the perspective that we might be missing. Too, as the saying goes, if we don't have anything nice to say, it's probably best not to say anything at all.

You're looking at ways you can bring in some extra money. Perhaps it's time to put in a request for a raise or take on a temporary side gig.

Lil Nas X Parodies Drake's 'Certified Lover Boy' Cover - HYPEBEAST
Earlier today, Drake shared a post to Instagram that unveiled the release date and cover art of his forthcoming album Certified Lover Boy, which is set to release September 3. The unveiled cover art was designed by Damien Hirst and showcases a spread of Apple’s pregnant woman emoji in a range of reworked colors. It did not take long for Lil Nas X, one of the funniest musicians on social media to release his own iteration of the image.
Poking fun at Drake’s post, Lil Nax X’s reworked version of the Certified Lover Boy cover features a spread of pregnant man emojis also in an array of colors, which are reminiscent of Hirst’s spot paintings. Along with the parody post, the artist captioned the post with the release date of his forthcoming album Montero, which is set to release to release on September 17.
All has been well for Lil Nas X as he gears up for the release of the album. Recently, he also became the most-streamed male rapper on Spotify with over 52.3 million monthly listeners. With the highly anticipated work, he has already released a couple of songs and accompanying music videos that have garnered waves of acclaim including “Industry Baby,” which features Jack Harlow and was produced by Kanye West, in addition to “Call Me By Your Name.”
In related news, Lil Nas X and Tony Hawk controversy over blood-infused skateboards sparks “nah he tweakin” meme on Instagram.

Kanye West's Donda: What you need to know - CBC.ca
He's back: rapper Kanye West's long-anticipated 10th studio album Donda was released on Sunday by Def Jam Records. But the road to the album, first announced in June 2020 under a different title, has been bumpy. Here's everything you need to know about Donda:
Named for his late mother
A follow-up to 2019's Jesus is King, the album is named for West's late mother Donda West, who died in 2007 due to complications from surgery.
West is known for recutting his albums up to weeks after their official release. But in its current iteration, the album has a runtime of one hour and 49 minutes, making it one of his longest.
Collaborators spark criticism
West, who recently filed to change his name to "Ye," is a polarizing figure among fans and musicians, and he courted controversy again by including rapper DaBaby and singer Marilyn Manson — who have recently been accused of homophobia and sexual assault, respectively — on the album.
In July, DaBaby was criticized for making homophobic comments and spreading misinformation about HIV/AIDS during a live performance, while Manson faces rape and sexual assault allegations and lawsuits from women including actress Evan Rachel Wood.
'Without my approval'
The album was available on streaming services early Sunday morning. But just a few hours later, West took to Instagram, stating that Universal Music Group — of which Def Jam is a subsidiary — had released it without his approval.
West also claimed that the label cut the song Jail Pt. 2, featuring DaBaby and Manson.
In a since-deleted Instagram post, West said the track was removed because DaBaby's verse was not cleared by his manager.
In an exchange with West's manager Abou "Bu" Thiam, West said, "I'm not taking my brother off … He was the only person who said he would vote for me in public," a reference to the artist's short-lived 2020 presidential campaign. DaBaby had said he would vote for West.
Appearance by Kardashian
A listening party for Donda at Soldier Field Stadium in West's hometown of Chicago featured his estranged wife Kim Kardashian. Kardashian appeared on the field during the album's final track, wearing a Balenciaga wedding gown.
The Aug. 27 event was one of the most high-profile appearances the couple have made together since Kardashian filed for divorce in February.

Continues feud with Drake
It was rumoured West was planning to release the album on the same date as rival Drake's latest record, Certified Lover Boy.
It's not the first time that West's album was scheduled for release on the same date as that of a rival. Last summer, Donda was initially planned for a July 24, 2020 release, the same as Taylor Swift's folklore. Swift and West have sparred throughout the years since his infamous interruption of her speech at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards.
But the sour relationship between West and Drake hit a new level this month, with the Toronto-born rapper seemingly dissing West during a verse on rapper Trippie Redd's song Betrayal. West responded by publicly revealing, and then deleting, Drake's alleged Toronto address.
Drake isn't the only one in bad standing with West. Upon Donda's release, rapper Soulja Boy and singer Chris Brown took to social media to criticize West for cutting their featured verses on the album.
Soulja Boy, who tweeted a text exchange showing proof of a collaboration between him and West, was supposed to appear on the track Remote Control. Brown's vocals were initially included on New Again.

Kanye West disses Kim Kardashian in new album Donda - Geo News
Kanye West reportedly did not hold back from dissing his estranged wife Kim Kardashian in his new album Donda.
After many delays, the Yeezy designer dropped his highly anticipated album on Sunday.
The album features 26-tracks and surprising features from major artists like Jay-Z, The Weeknd and Ariana Grande.
Among the list of songs, one particularly stood out for its reference to the rapper’s marriage troubles with the reality TV star.
Titled Jail, the song was an apparent jibe at Kim for her decision to split from Kanye as he rapped: "Don’t you curse at mе on text, why you try to hit the flex? / I hold up, likе, ‘What?’ I scroll, I scroll up like, ‘Next’ / Guess who’s getting ex’d?"
However, Kanye seemed to like his newfound relationship status as he rapped: "You made a choice that’s yo’ bad, single life ain’t so bad."
In another track titled Believe What I Say, the rapper insisted that that he always gave Kim whatever she wanted as he "never questioned what you was asking for", and that he "gave you every single thing you was asking for".
It remains to be seen if Kanye's lyrics paint a picture of the earliest days of their separation or whether it is their current relationship.

Drake Confirms New Album Certified Lover Boy Is Out Friday - Pitchfork
Drake Confirms New Album Certified Lover Boy Is Out Friday
By Allison Hussey and Jazz Monroe
Drake’s new album Certified Lover Boy is out Friday, September 3, he confirmed in an Instagram post Monday morning (August 30). The post features the official album cover, too, according to Tidal’s chief content officer Elliott Wilson. Announced last August with the Lil Durk collaboration “Laugh Now Cry Later,” Certified Lover Boy was first set for a January release before repeated delays. Today’s confirmation follows a cryptic ESPN promo last week pointing to the September 3 release date.
On August 21, before releasing the SportsCenter teaser, Drake apparently reignited a feud with Kanye West that began in 2008, using his guest verse on Trippie Redd’s “Betrayal” to rap, “Ye ain’t changin’ shit for me, it’s set in stone.” West responded by posting an Instagram Story of an antagonistic text message, and another revealing Drake’s home address (which he quickly deleted).
Though Certified Lover Boy is the full-length successor to 2018’s Scorpion, Drake has released some new material in between, including last year’s Dark Lane Demo Tapes. The project—Drake’s first in a decade not to make a No. 1 Billboard debut—included his attempted dance challenge “Toosie Slide.”
Drake issued the three-song Scary Hours 2 EP in March, and has also joined Smiley and Brent Faiyaz on songs this year. In May, he and Lil Wayne joined Nicki Minaj on “Seeing Green,” a new bonus track that accompanied the belated streaming debut of her 2009 mixtape Beam Me Up Scotty. Before that, Drake had teamed up on new tracks with Lil Yachty, DJ Khaled, Future, Lil Wayne, and Popcaan. Outside of the studio, he launched his own cannabis brand and was honored at the 2021 Billboard Music Awards as the Artist of the Decade.

IF TODAY IS YOUR BIRTHDAY
Financial matters will take on added importance over the coming year and if you keep your eyes and ears open you will spot opportunities to make some serious money. Don’t listen to those who say others will lose out if you gain – it isn’t true.
ARIES (March 21 - April 20):
Don’t limit yourself to doing just one thing or socializing with just one group of people over the next few days. The more you put yourself about the more you will enjoy yourself, and the more useful contacts you will make for the future.
TAURUS (April 21 - May 21):
You may not be able to turn back the clock but if you are smart you will recognize that the same sort of events tend to repeat themselves, and if you learn from them you won’t have to make yesterday’s mistakes again today or tomorrow.
GEMINI (May 22 - June 21):
A turning point in a relationship has been reached and while it may indeed be a point of no return it could just as easily be a point of renewal – it’s entirely up to you. It’s time to make a commitment, or cut your losses and look elsewhere.
CANCER (June 22 - July 23):
Just because other people see an issue differently to you does not mean that they are blind and you possess 20-20 vision. The message of the stars today is that there are many shades of right and wrong – a fact you would do well to embrace.
LEO (July 24 - Aug. 23):
Forces over which you have no control have been pushing you in directions you did not want to go but as from today you will begin to recognize that it may have been for your own good. You won’t admit it, of course, but you will learn from it.
VIRGO (Aug. 24 - Sept. 23):
A solution to a problem that had previously baffled you will start to take shape today and that’s very good news indeed. Don’t be too proud to admit that you should have seen it earlier – that was then and this is now and there’s no need for regrets.
LIBRA (Sept. 24 - Oct. 23):
As Mercury moves into your sign today you will begin to find the voice you lost in recent weeks. Be careful though. Just because you are in a position to state a few home truths to friends and loved ones does not make it a good idea.
SCORPIO (Oct. 24 - Nov. 22):
You are beginning to realize that the harder you work the less you seem to get for it and that means changes are necessary. To start with, let colleagues and employers know they can do their own heavy lifting from here on in. You’ve done enough.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 23 - Dec. 21):
Follow your instincts and don’t worry that you seem to be the only one who is willing to take a risk. It may be that you are reading the situation the wrong way but it’s far more likely that others are being timid for no good reason.
CAPRICORN (Dec. 22 - Jan. 20):
Nothing seems to add up at the moment, which is frustrating to say the least, but it doesn’t spell doom and disaster so why worry? This is one of those times when it might be safer to sit back and observe rather than get personally involved.
AQUARIUS (Jan. 21 - Feb. 19):
No matter how many little things go wrong over the next few days the big things will all go right, so put on a happy face and let the world see you are loving every minute of your life – because you should be … you’re blessed.
PISCES (Feb. 20 - Mar. 20):
This is probably not the best day to do something on the spur of the moment, especially if it’s likely to affect other people in various ways. They won’t be amused if they lose out financially because you have made a poor decision.

Chris Brown blasts Kanye West for cutting his verse from 'Donda' track - Page Six
Chris Brown resorted to name-calling after Kanye West allegedly cut one of his verses from the rapper’s new album, “Donda.”
While Brown’s vocals appear on the chorus of the 27-track album’s 18th song, “New Again,” an additional verse that he apparently recorded was nowhere to be found when “Donda” finally hit streaming services Sunday morning.
“Kanye a whole hoe,” Brown, 32, wrote on his Instagram Story in response to the alleged snub.
In another post, he added, “Nah he tweakin.”
A source close to the situation told The Shade Room that Brown — who was last featured on West’s 2016 album, “The Life of Pablo,” on the song “Waves” — “was a little heated about his verse being removed from one of the songs on the new album.”
Reps for Brown and West did not immediately respond to our requests for comment.
Brown isn’t the only artist to voice frustration over being cut from West’s much-anticipated (and much-delayed) album.
Soulja Boy also blasted Kim Kardashian’s estranged husband for allegedly ditching his verse. The “Crank That” rapper, 31, released screenshots of a conversation he had with West in which they discussed the verse, with Soulja Boy tweeting angrily Sunday, “This n—-a Kanye smh. Tell homie dont hit my phone no more.”
Embattled rapper DaBaby, meanwhile, was originally cut from the “Donda” song “Jail” following his homophobic rant in July, but West rectified the situation and had DaBaby’s version, entitled “Jail Pt. 2,” added to the album hours after it dropped Sunday.
West said that despite the internet canceling DaBaby over his controversial comments, he decided to move forward with their collaboration because the “Rockstar” rapper was “the only person who said he would vote for me in public” in the 2020 presidential election.
West has since claimed that “Donda” was released by Universal Music Group, the parent company to Def Jam Records, without his permission.
“UNIVERSAL PUT MY ALBUM OUT WITHOUT MY APPROVAL AND THEY BLOCKED JAIL 2 FROM BEING ON THE ALBUM,” he alleged in an Instagram post Sunday.
“Jail Pt. 2” also features Marylin Manson, who is facing multiple accusations of sexual assault and abuse.

‘Candyman’ Grosses $22.3 Million to Become the First #1 Film Directed by a Black Woman - IndieWire
The end of August is known for its box-office doldrums, exhibition continues to face a dark time — and Nia DaCosta’s “Candyman” scored an estimated $22,370,00 in its initial domestic weekend, beating the lowball projection of $15 million by nearly 50 percent.
That success testifies to the enduring appeal of the 1992 horror film, but it’s not the only good news: The #2 film, “Free Guy” (Disney), dropped only 27 percent in its third weekend.
All told, the weekend grossed $63 million. That’s about the same as last week and it represents 58 percent of the same weekend in 2019. Our ongoing comparative four-week rolling average increased slightly, to 56 percent of the same 2019 period. That’s the highest number since mid-July.
Here are a couple of standout comparisons for “Candyman.” Two years ago, “Angel Has Fallen,” the third film in Lionsgate’s action franchise, opened the same weekend to $21 million. At that time, it was considered an excellent result for the date. Two weeks ago, “Don’t Breathe 2” opened to $10.6 million. That number informed the lowball guesses for “Candyman,” but those didn’t consider several notable factors.
Related
Related
First is the intensity of interest. The original film, which was based on a short story by Clive Barker, centered on an urban legend about the ghost of a murdered son of a slave who reappears and goes on a murderous rampage. The new version, unlike 1992’s, has a Black creative team that includes writing and producing roles for Jordan Peele.
Universal believed it would attract Black viewers with the pedigree of “Get Out” and “Us,” and it did. However, the appeal was more diverse: Per the studio’s audience survey, 37 percent of the audience was Black, white was 30 percent, Latinos 22 percent, and Asians 5 percent. That spread was key to reaching the higher number.
Also restraining initial estimates was the film was it didn’t play it safe. Reviews were among the best for wide studio releases this year, which doesn’t necessarily mean much in reaching a wide audience for a horror film, but they did emphasize the film’s original elements as well as Peele’s influence while emphasizing DaCosta’s individual contribution. An element of danger, a sense of the unknown, strong IP and execution: That’s a good lesson for producers who fear taking risks.
“Candyman” appears to be the first #1 film from a Black female director. Although some have come close, including Ava DuVernay (“Selma,” “A Wrinkle in Time”) and Gina Prince-Blythewood (“Love and Basketball”), all opened in second place. DaCosta has broken new ground.
TDP
Originality was also key to the success of Ryan Reynolds comedy “Free Guy.” It grossed over $79 million after its third weekend, which improved its hold in week 3. However, the best hold belongs to “Jungle Cruise.” In week 5, it dropped only 21 percent, and crossed the $100 million domestic mark. Unlike “Candyman” or “Free Guy,” it has home availability (at $29.99). Although alternative platforms have an impact, it appears the key to good holds has much more to do with audience reaction than availability.
Four underwhelming openers from last week all took greater drops. “PAW Patrol” (Paramount), also on the studio’s subscription streaming site, dropped 50 percent (family titles tend to hold better than this second-weekend fall). “The Protege” (Lionsgate) held best, down 43 percent. “The Night House” (Searchlight) fell 57 percent, “Reminiscence” (Warner Bros.) starring Hugh Jackman didn’t even hang on in the top 10; it fell 58 percent (it can also be seen at HBO Max, although that play likely had only minor impact).
Bleecker Street
Starting this week, film festivals will roll out the specialized titles that will be critical in rescuing the arthouse market from its low ebb. This week, Bleecker Street opened “Together” directed by Stephen Daldry (“The Hours”) starring James McAvoy and Sharon Horgan as a quarantining couple. Most of its 250 theaters were top-quality locations, but it grossed only $102,000. It did not have review support, similar to Sean Penn’s “Flag Day” (United Artists), which also had a weak opening.

Ed Asner, Emmy-winning actor of The Mary Tyler Moore Show and Lou Grant fame, dies at 91 - CBC.ca
Ed Asner, the burly and prolific character actor who became a star in middle age as the gruff but lovable newsman Lou Grant, first in the hit comedy The Mary Tyler Moore Show and later in the drama Lou Grant, has died. He was 91.
Asner's representative confirmed the actor's death in an email to The Associated Press. Asner's official Twitter account included a note from his children: "We are sorry to say that our beloved patriarch passed away this morning peacefully. Words cannot express the sadness we feel. With a kiss on your head- Goodnight dad. We love you."
Built like the football lineman he once was, the balding Asner was a journeyman actor in films and TV when he was hired in 1970 to play Lou Grant on The Mary Tyler Moore Show. For seven seasons he was the rumpled boss to Moore's ebullient Mary Richards (he called her Mary, she called him Mr. Grant) at the fictional Minneapolis TV newsroom where they both worked. Later, he would play the role for five years on Lou Grant.
Asner's character had caught on from the first episode of Mary Tyler Moore, when he told Mary in their initial meeting, "You've got spunk.... I hate spunk!"
The inspired cast included Ted Knight as Ted Baxter, the dimwitted news anchor; Gavin MacLeod as Murray Slaughter, the sarcastic news writer; and Betty White as the manipulative, sex-obsessed home show hostess Sue Ann Nivens. Valerie Harper and Cloris Leachman, playing Mary's neighbours, both saw their characters spun off into their own shows.
Asner is the third Mary Tyler Moore alum to die in recent months. Leachman died in January and MacLeod died in May.
The 99-year-old White is the lone surviving main cast member from Mary Tyler Moore.
Hollywood reacted swiftly to the news of Asner's passing, with filmmakers Michael Moore and Judd Apatow and actors Michael McKean and Maureen McCormick among those paying tribute on Twitter.
As recently as a few weeks ago the great @TheOnlyEdAsner was contacting me about benefits to help raise money for charity. He was always a brilliant and often hilarious actor, but more importantly he worked till his final days trying to be of service to other people. RIP. https://t.co/RorQBu3dkt

Making my 1st film, Roger & Me, I was broke so I wrote to some famous people to ask for help. Only one responded: Ed Asner. “I don’t know you, kid, but here’s 500 bucks” said the note attached to the check. “Sounds like it’ll be a great film. I was an autoworker once.” R.I.P. Ed Asner was a fine man and a great actor. He was tough in the ways that count and suffered no fools. I acted with him just once and knew how lucky I was to do so. A hero. Rest in peace, Ed.

I’m heartbroken. Rest In Peace my sweet, kind and dear friend Ed. You made and will continue to make this world a better place. I love you and will miss you so very much. 💔 pic.twitter.com/L0tatwgEvt

Won multiple Emmys
Mary Tyler Moore was still a hit when the star decided to pursue other interests, and so it was brought to an end in the seventh season with a hilarious finale in which all of the principals were fired except for the bumbling Baxter.
Asner went immediately into Lou Grant, his character moving from Minneapolis to Los Angeles to become city editor of the Tribune, a crusading newspaper under the firm hand of Publisher Margaret Pynchon, memorably played by Nancy Marchand.
Asner won three best supporting actor Emmys on Mary Tyler Moore and two best actor awards on Lou Grant. He also won Emmys for his roles in the miniseries Rich Man, Poor Man (1975-1976) and Roots (1976-1977).
He had more than 300 acting credits and remained active throughout his 70s and 80s in a variety of film and TV roles. In 2003, he played Santa Claus in Will Ferrell's hit film Elf. He was John Goodman's father in the short-lived 2004 CBS comedy Center of the Universe and the voice of the elderly hero in the hit 2009 Pixar release, Up. More recently, he was in such TV series as Forgive Me and Dead to Me.
Nonetheless, Asner told The Associated Press in 2009 that interesting roles were hard to come by.
"I never get enough work," he said. "It's the history of my career. There just isn't anything to turn down, let me put it that way."
"I'd say most people are probably in that same boat, old people, and it's a shame," he said.
Political controversy
As Screen Actors Guild president, the liberal Asner was caught up in a political controversy in 1982 when he spoke out against U.S. involvement with repressive governments in Latin America. Lou Grant was cancelled during the furor that followed and he did not run for a third SAG term in 1985.
"There have been few actors of Ed Asner's prominence who risked their status to fight for social causes the way Ed did," said actor Gabrielle Carteris, who is SAG-AFTRA's president.
She noted that his advocacy "did not stop with performers. He fought for victims of poverty, violence, war, and legal and social injustice, both in the United States and around the globe."
Asner discussed his politicization in a 2002 interview, noting he had begun his career during the McCarthy era and for years had been afraid to speak out for fear of being blacklisted.
Then he saw a nun's film depicting the cruelties inflicted by El Salvador's government on that country's citizens.
"I stepped out to complain about our country's constant arming and fortifying of the military in El Salvador, who were oppressing their people," he said.
Former SAG president Charlton Heston and others accused him of making un-American statements and of misusing his position as head of their actors union.
"We even had bomb threats at the time. I had armed guards," Asner recalled.
The actor blamed the controversy for ending the five-year run of Lou Grant, although CBS insisted declining ratings were the reason the show was cancelled.
Although the show had its light moments, its scripts touched on a variety of darker social issues that most series wouldn't go near at the time, including alcoholism and homelessness. Asner remained politically active for the rest of his life and in 2017 published the book The Grouchy Historian: An Old-Time Lefty Defends Our Constitution Against Right-Wing Hypocrites and Nutjobs.
Asner, born in Kansas City, Mo., in 1929, almost became a newsman in real life. He studied journalism at the University of Chicago until a professor told him there was little money to be made in the profession.
He quickly switched to drama, debuting as the martyred Thomas Becket in a campus production of T.S. Eliot's Murder in the Cathedral.
He eventually dropped out of school, going to work as a taxi driver and other jobs before being drafted in 1951. He served with the Army Signal Corps in France.
Returning to Chicago after military service, he appeared at the Playwrights Theatre Club and Second City, the famed satire troupe that launched the careers of dozens of top comedians.
Later, in New York, he joined the long-running The Threepenny Opera and appeared opposite Jack Lemmon in Face of a Hero.
Arriving in Hollywood in 1961 for an episode of television's Naked City, Asner decided to stay and appeared in numerous movies and TV shows, including the film El Dorado, opposite John Wayne; and the Elvis Presley vehicles Kid Galahad and Change of Habit. He was a regular in the 1960s political drama series Slattery's People.
He was married twice, to Nancy Lou Sykes and Cindy Gilmore, and had four children, Matthew, Liza, Kate and Charles.

Candyman Slashes Through Box Office Competition With Strong $22.3 Million Opening Weekend - IGN - IGN
R-rated horror slasher Candyman had a strong opening weekend at the domestic box office, earning $22.3 million in 3,569 theaters.
This news comes by way of Variety, which also reports that the Nia DaCosta-directed and Jordan Peele-produced film brought in an additional $5.2 million overseas across 51 international markets. This brings Candyman's opening weekend grand total to about $27.5 million.
The movie, which cost MGM $25 million to produce, is due to be quite profitable for the studio, according to Variety. This is especially great news for MGM as other R-rated movies have struggled in the pandemic-era box office. The Suicide Squad opened to just $26.5 million, despite industry expectations that predicted it would pull in around $30 million, for example.
However, unlike Candyman, The Suicide Squad also debuted on a subscription streaming service (HBO Max), following suit with many other movies released this summer. What The Suicide Squad didn't make at the box office, it might have made up for with new HBO Max subscriptions.
Have you seen Candyman?
Candyman debuted exclusively to theaters, though, and having already made back the money it cost to make, the upcoming three-day weekend could be big for the horror movie. Variety cites the movie's nature as a sequel, as well as its 85% on Rotten Tomatoes and "B" CinemaScore, as reasons for its box office success.
The Yahya Abdul-Mateen II-led movie knocked Ryan Reynolds’ Free Guy down to second place after the video game-themed movie sat at the number one spot for two weeks straight. Free Guy earned an additional $13.6 million from 3,940 theaters, a decline of 27% from its second weekend to the third, according to Variety's report. This brings Free Guy's grand box office total up to $179 million.
The animated PAW Patrol from Paramount took third place this weekend, bringing in $6.6 million from 3,189 theaters. Its grand total in the U.S. and Canada where it was shown sits at $24 million. Disney's Jungle Cruise came in fourth, bringing in another $5 million for a total of $187 million at the box office (although the movie is also available on Disney+ as a Premiere Access title).
Sony's Don't Breathe 2 took fifth place with $2.8 million across 2,703 theaters, bringing the movie's total at the domestic box office to $24.5 million.
